It’s 6:35pm on a normal weekday evening on the Kapiti Coast, dinner’s almost ready to serve and…….the phone rings. You pick it up and there doesn’t appear to be anyone on the other end. Suddenly after about 5 seconds a foreign voice comes on the line and quickly introduces themselves as “Microsoft Support”. They tell you that they’ve detected a problem on your computer and they want to connect to it and remedy the issue.
Does this all sound familiar – it should, because almost all of us will have encountered this targeted scam in the past few months – sometimes repeatedly! Continue reading
Microsoft has run into a new serious problem with its Anniversary update of the Windows 10 operating system which hit the world stage over the past few weeks.
The new problems comes at a bad time for Microsoft when W10 just became a chargeable product after a year of free upgrades when the Anniversary upgrade was the one to make Windows 10 the preferred OS choice across the World.
Web cameras no longer working, Skype telephony having problems in various locations, PCs that cannot start up, and up to time of writing no solutions from Microsoft; Meanwhile those with dead PCs have no way of getting their files, documents, photos etc working.
OK…OK, I admit that nothing terminal is going to happen to your computer (or you!) if you don’t upgrade to Windows 10 but one thing’s for sure, if you don’t accept the free upgrade before 29 July 2016, you will have to pay Microsoft at least $US109 for the privilege when you finally realise the world’s leaving you behind!
Of course, if you’re planning on replacing your old clunker laptop/desktop in the very near future (ie this year!), upgrading to Win 10 is a bit of waste of time but for everyone else….

What are the facts? Continue reading
So what happened to Windows 9? I rather thought that was due out this month, alas, the new face of Windows is to be known as ‘10’, perhaps like Bo Derek in the film ‘Arthur’, something to aspire to for this release of Windows operating systems. I gather that Microsoft claimed that W10 was such a leap from 8 that calling it Windows 9 would not do it justice. Groan.
The new Windows10 appears to be a combination of Windows7 and 8 taking the better part of both and introducing new and major capabilities which overall looks endearing to the user and should make W-10 the best Windows OS yet.
At this stage only the technical preview has been made available and the finished product is now scheduled to be launched around June or July next year so much can yet be changed or modified before launch date.
The new pre-viewed OS seems
