From the Chair

Well folks, that’s a wrap for 2020!

As year’s go, I think I’ll give it just one star!

At SeniorNet Kapiti though, we’ve weathered the storm and come out the other side as a stronger organisation than when we started. Along the way we’ve discovered the power and reach of online learning, firstly during Lockdown and more recently through our participation in the Senior Hangouts Pilot run by The Federation. I think there’s a lot more to come from this technology now we’re all better acquainted with it.

Communication has been crucial to keeping SeniorNet Kapiti running throughout the ups and downs that marked 2020. We’ve used every electronic tool in our toolbox to keep our organisation functioning and to provide our members with access to the information and advice they expect from us. I suspect that we’ve also been an important social lifeline for many of our members when their normal activities ground to a halt – I hope so.

We couldn’t have achieved all this without the enormous dedication and loyalty of our Tutors. They stepped up when asked and gave significant amounts of their personal time to assist our members. On behalf of the entire membership I want to publicly thank all our Tutors for their fantastic commitment and tireless efforts during what’s been a pretty bumpy year.

SeniorNet Kapiti couldn’t operate as efficiently as it does without its amazing Committee. Each person has specific roles assigned and everyone does their bit. The end result is the well-oiled machine you see in operation throughout the year, preparing timetables, taking bookings, organising Tutors and assistant Tutors, collating and analysing your questionnaires, handling membership queries and a thousand other “officey” things, publicising our organisation, looking after the building, keeping our computers up to date and of course handling all the money throughout the year. Please join me in a hearty “three cheers” for the Committee!

It was great meeting so many of you at the recent Christmas Function and I look forward to seeing you all again next year. For now, the Committee and Tutors are all taking a well-earned break until classes recommence in February. If you’re already keen for more, there are links to our Term 1 timetables below.

Finally, I’d like to wish every member of SeniorNet Kapiti a happy and safe Christmas and a substantially better 2021.

Christmas Function Aftermath!

It was great to see so many people at our Christmas Function this year.

Courses and Workshops

A number of our recently run courses and workshops, designed to make life easier in this increasingly digital age, have been remarkably successful. It is our intention to continue this theme next year. 

During October and November, workshops on Internet Banking, How to Recognise Scams and, for clients, information on dealing with AMI digitally rather than face-to-face, have all proved very popular


A New Year Treat for AMI Customers

If you are an AMI insurance client, it’s worth knowing that AMI will be paying your SeniorNet subscription for the 2021-22 year, to reflect the assistance to their customers provided by SeniorNet. We will be contacting all our members in the New Year to ask which of you are AMI Insurance customers so we can submit the necessary paperwork to The Federation and receive payment for your free subscription renewal in April.


Major Change to our Regular Workshop Lineup

Moving on to next year there is an important development affecting members who have been supporters of our ‘Question and Answers’ Workshops.

As a result of the diverse and evolving range of devices now available to our members, our Q&A Workshop will be retired in 2021 and replaced with a new ‘Windows Users Workshop’ in the same timeslot (1st Thursday of the month @ 9:30am).

We’re making this change because, while our original Q & A Workshops were aimed at Windows PC users, in recent years we have developed separate workshops for Tablets and Smartphones as well as iPads/iPods. To avoid overlap with these other popular Workshops, the Windows Users’ Workshop will handle topics and questions solely around Windows 10 and Windows applications (programs). So if you are using a Windows desktop or laptop, we look forward to seeing you.

Peter Jones will be hosting the new Workshop so if you have topics you would like him to cover, please send him a note (snktechnical@gmail.com) and a brief description so he can start building a playlist for 2021.

Right now, there are plenty of places on our regular courses and workshops so we encourage you to contact Elaine (email SNKBookings@gmail.com or phone 021 169 6256) early to ensure that there is room for you on the course or workshop of your choice.

Fancy Helping Out at SeniorNet?

Our last Newsletter raised the subject of further volunteers coming forward to take on Tutor Training, and we would ask anyone interested in this path to contact Sue Connor – just leave a message on our answerphone (tel: 04 299 0754) and she’ll call you back.

The pathway to Lead Tutor is well designed, and has several steps along the way through Assistant and Demonstrator to Leader.

Anyone with a background in training, teaching or even an aspiration to be either would be warmly welcomed into our active Tutor Group.
