Chairman’s Christmas Message
On reflection, 2015 has been a very successful year for SeniorNet Kapiti. We have a paid up membership of over 350, our Courses have been extremely well supported and we finished the year with a most enjoyable Drinks and Nibbles session at the Learning Centre.
My thanks to the Members of the Executive for their commitment to managing the various aspects of the Learning Centre activities and to the Tutors and Assistant Tutors for the excellent work they undertake in presenting our Courses.
As we look forward to 2016, we see that the Courses for the First Term are filling fast and I urge you to contact Teresa as soon as possible to reserve a place. I am confident that with your ongoing support, we will have another very enjoyable and fruitful year.
Have you upgraded to Windows 10 yet? We’ve now had plenty of time to observe the effectiveness of the upgrade process and it’s proving to be quite painless albeit a little slower than we would like (around 1-1.5hrs). From our end, we’ve upgraded all the computers in The Learning Centre to Windows 10 without incident so we can now offer our members Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 to use during our courses.
We are therefore confident to advise (encourage?) our members to proceed with the Windows 10 Upgrade being pushed onto your PCs by Microsoft. As an aside, Windows 10 is an impressive improvement on both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and contains the best features of both these older operating systems. It’s not yet perfect (will it ever be?) but even when problems do occur, Windows 10 seems to be very good at self-diagnosis and recovery.
There is one minor caveat to our recommendation though. We have heard reports that some people who years ago upgraded their computers from Vista to Windows 7 are having issues with the subsequent upgrade to Windows 10. If you fall into this category PLEASE make sure you back all your data up before starting the upgrade, otherwise it’s safe to proceed.
When you are ready to proceed, please read the article on our website here – it contains an overview of the upgrade process.
If you’re still not confident after reading the article, we’ll be holding Windows 10 Introduction Courses in the New Year where you can see the Upgrade Process for yourself as well as get some hand’s-on practice with Windows 10 on our Learning Centre PCs.
If you’re a Facebook user, please “Like” our page and you’ll get almost immediate notification of what’s on at SeniorNet.
We are always on the lookout for new tutors so if you think you can help, contact Kuini at firstname.lastname@example.org . Training is provided for all new tutors.
Have fun computing
